“I believe that photography as an artistic medium is strong enough to withstand the questioning of everything unequivocal to eventually evolve into what it subsequently is meant to be: true art!”

“Permeation I” 2020, 114” x 77”
In a time of the ubiquitous availability of hi-resolution cell phone cameras and the simplicity of digital manipulation, mainstream photography has been reduced to a commodity. A complete break from conceptual norms is imperative.
Dismissal of the technically possible to achieve the artistically impossible!
The absence of figurative representation, the abandonment of depth of field, the disavowal of color conventions are a departure from what is widely accepted and expected from photography. Obenaus counters the bourgeois insignificance and mundane triviality of the Instagram World.
“I believe that Photography as an artistic medium is strong enough to withstand the questioning of everything unequivocal to eventually evolve into what it is subsequently meant to be: true art!”
Obenaus transcends the role of photography from a repetitive process of replication, to a creative act of production. Expressionistic impressions with little or no reference to reality. A lack of shadows, three-dimensionality, and figurative inferences.
More reminiscent of a painting than a photograph.
He uses large-format cameras, radioactive lenses and digital technology to create over-sized chromogenic prints and di-bond sublimations on aluminum of his art.
